When to Switch to Winter Tires in Calgary (and Why You Should Book Early)

Quick answer
In Calgary, switch to winter tires before the first lasting snow — usually in the fall. Book your changeover early because spots fill fast once the weather turns. Winter tires stay softer in the cold and grip better than all-seasons, even on dry, cold pavement.
Why winter tires matter in Calgary
Calgary winters drop well below freezing, and the rubber in all-season tires gets hard and slippery in the cold. Winter tires are made from a softer compound that stays flexible when it's cold, so they grip better — on snow, on ice, and even on dry pavement that's below 7°C.
Between the snow, the freeze-thaw of chinooks, and the gravel the city puts down, Calgary roads are hard on tires. A good set of winter tires gives you shorter stopping distances and more control exactly when you need it most.
All-season vs winter tires
All-season tires are a compromise — they're okay in mild weather but they're not built for sustained cold. Winter tires are purpose-made for low temperatures, snow and ice. In general terms, if you drive through a Calgary winter, a dedicated winter tire gives you a real safety margin that all-seasons don't.
If you're not sure what your car needs, bring it in and we'll look at your tires and tell you honestly whether they'll get you through the season.
Signs your winter tires are worn out
Watch for these signs that it's time to replace your winter tires:
- Tread depth is getting low (the wear bars are showing)
- The rubber looks cracked or dried out
- You're slipping or sliding more than you used to
- The tires are more than a few seasons old
What happens at a JCo Auto changeover
When you book a Seasonal Tire Swap and Balancing, we do more than just swap the wheels. We balance the tires, check the pressure and tread, and torque every wheel properly so nothing loosens on the drive home.
If you're also running New and Winter Tire Installation, we can mount, balance and install a fresh set at the same time. And while the wheels are off, it's a good moment to check whether you're due for a Wheel Alignment.
Storing your off-season tires
Store your off-season set somewhere cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. Keep them stacked (if they're off the rims) or upright (if they're on the rims). Avoid letting them sit on bare concrete that gets very cold, and keep them away from solvents and fuel. General tips — your owner's manual may have more specific guidance for your setup.
Spring changeover timing
In spring, wait until the risk of snow and hard frost has mostly passed before you swap back — usually once overnight lows stay above freezing. Booking your spring changeover early is just as smart, because once the snow clears, everyone wants their summers back on at the same time.
