Quick answer

A simple schedule keeps your car reliable through Calgary's winters and road-trip seasons: check a few things monthly, swap tires and do seasonal checks in fall and spring, and do a full inspection yearly. Follow your owner's manual for service intervals.

Monthly checks

These take a few minutes and catch small problems early:

  • Tire pressure — Calgary temperature swings change it fast
  • Fluid levels — oil, coolant, and washer fluid
  • Lights — headlights, brake lights, and turn signals
  • Wiper blades and washer fluid — you'll thank yourself in a Calgary storm

Seasonal: fall and spring

Calgary's two big maintenance moments are fall (before winter) and spring (before road-trip season). In fall:

  • Tire changeover to winters — book early, spots fill fast
  • Seasonal inspection to catch what winter will stress
  • Battery and charging system check before the cold
  • Heater and defrost — make sure they'll keep up all winter

Spring seasonal checks

In spring, before you put summer kilometres on the car:

  • Tire changeover back to summers or all-seasons
  • Seasonal inspection after a hard winter
  • AC check so it's cold before the first hot week

Yearly checks

Once a year, give the car a thorough once-over. A Full Vehicle Inspection covers the big safety and reliability items in one visit:

  • Full inspection of brakes, tires, steering, suspension, fluids, belts and hoses
  • Brake inspection — pads, rotors and calipers
  • Belts and hoses — a cracked belt or soft hose can leave you stranded
  • Cooling system — so you don't overheat on a summer highway trip

By your manual

Some intervals depend on your specific car, so check your owner's manual or ask us. The ones people ask about most:

  • Oil change interval — depends on your oil type and mileage
  • Timing belt — follow your manual's interval; don't guess
  • Spark plugs — done to your vehicle's specs
  • Fuel injector cleaning — about every 50,000 km as a general guide
