Brake rotor and caliper on a car

Quick answer

Squealing, grinding, a soft or spongy pedal, pulling when you brake, or a brake warning light are all signs your brakes need attention. Don't wait — brake problems get more expensive the longer you drive on them. Walk in or book a brake inspection at JCo Auto.

1. Squealing

A high-pitched squeal when you brake often means your brake pads are getting low. Many pads have a small wear indicator that makes noise on purpose to tell you it's time. Squealing can also come from glazing or moisture, but it's always worth checking.

2. Grinding

A grinding sound is more serious. It usually means the pads are worn down to the metal and are cutting into the rotors. If you hear grinding, stop driving on those brakes and get it looked at right away — the longer you drive, the more damage you do to the rotors (and the bigger the bill).

3. Soft or spongy pedal

If your brake pedal feels soft, sinks to the floor, or doesn't feel firm, you may have a brake fluid problem, air in the lines, or a leak. This is a safety issue — get it checked before you drive far.

4. Pulling or vibration

If the car pulls to one side when you brake, or the pedal or steering wheel vibrates, you could have a stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or warped rotors. A suspension and steering check can rule out related causes at the same time.

5. Brake warning light

If the brake warning light comes on and stays on, don't ignore it. It can mean low brake fluid, a parking brake that didn't fully release, or a problem with the braking system. Get it diagnosed before you rely on those brakes at highway speed.

Why brake fluid matters

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and that moisture lowers the boiling point and makes your brakes feel soft. A brake fluid flush replaces the old, moisture-filled fluid to keep your brakes firm and responsive. It's a small service that makes a real difference in how your brakes feel.

How do I know if my brake fluid needs flushing?+

If your pedal feels soft or spongy, or it's been a long time since the fluid was changed, ask us. We check the fluid condition during a brake inspection.
